The University of Eastern Finland is involved in several projects, which focus in particular on monitoring the impact of water quality on changes in crayfish populations. For example, in the Saimaa region, the relationship between water quality and the size, quantity and disease situation of crayfishes has been monitored since 2009. The possible adverse effects of wastewater from the Talvivaara mine on the crayfish population have also been monitored in Nuasjärvi. One method developed for monitoring crayfish stocks is the eDNA method, the use of which one of the projects aims to make routine.
