KuVe project strengthens foundations for water sector collaboration in Morocco: new comprehensive report on Morocco’s water sector now available
The Savonia-led KuVe project, concluding in September 2026, has further reinforced the Kuopio region’s role as a leading hub for water sector research, innovation, and international collaboration. The project advanced the development of digital twins for the Kuopio water utility network and the Water LOOP water laboratory, explored the application of artificial intelligence in water services, and investigated innovative approaches to improving water use efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing resource recovery in the pulp and paper industry. The work also resulted in new research and business networks, the preparation of follow-up project initiatives, and three comprehensive reports on industrial water management.
Morocco was a key focus country for the project’s international activities. Facing increasing challenges related to drought, groundwater depletion, and rising water demand, the country is investing heavily in seawater desalination, water reuse, digital monitoring systems, and resource-efficient treatment technologies. Through the KuVe project, a solid foundation for future collaboration was established by building international consortia, preparing new funding proposals, and initiating research and business partnerships between Finnish and Moroccan stakeholders. In addition, new collaboration openings were made with Luleå University of Technology especially regarding digitalization and cyber security.
As part of the project, an in-depth report on Morocco’s water sector was produced. The report highlights business opportunities in areas such as wastewater treatment and water reuse, membrane technologies, smart water networks, sludge valorisation, and technical education and training. While Finnish organisations offer strong expertise in sustainable and digital water solutions, successful market entry requires local partnerships and long-term engagement. The report provides an overview of Morocco’s water sector and its regulatory and economic framework, practical guidance for market entry, key contacts, and profiles of the sector’s most important stakeholders.

KuVe – Leveraging Kuopio water expertise to promote international visibility and catalyse business

The KuVe-project is co-funded by the European Union (The Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021-2027). The project is also co-funded by the City of Kuopio, and it supports the implementation of the strategic water expertise focus area of the City of Kuopio’s ecosystem agreement.
The project was carried out jointly by Savonia University of Applied Sciences, the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), and the University of Eastern Finland.
