Current Trends in Water Treatment in the Pulp and Paper Industry

Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) have prepared, as part of the KuVe project (From Kuopio’s Water Expertise to International Visibility and Business), three reports that address current water‑treatment trends in the pulp and paper industry, the development of permit conditions, and new methods for treating wastewater emissions. The reports (in Finnish) can be read at:

The KuVe project is being carried out by the three founding members of the Kuopio Water Cluster (Savonia, GTK and UEF) during the period 1 October 2024 – 30 September 2026. The project is funded through the ERDF sustainable urban development funding that implements the City of Kuopio’s ecosystem agreement. The City of Kuopio acts as a co‑funding partner for the project, while the Regional Council of North Savo serves as the funding authority.

The aim of the KuVe project is to strengthen the capabilities of the Kuopio Water Cluster (KWC), particularly as an ecosystem for developing digital solutions in the water sector, and to enhance the visibility and role of Kuopio’s water‑sector expertise and business activities within the value chains of water treatment and process-water circulation in the pulp and paper industry.

In addition, the project seeks to increase company‑driven international activities to address global water challenges based on Finnish water expertise — with a special focus on Morocco in North Africa.
