WaterSafe Tool
Developed as part of the ReNutriWater project “Closing local water circuits by recirculating nutrients and water and using them in nature”
About ReNutriWater Project
The ReNutriWater project aims to preserve nutrients in reclaimed water during the water recovery process and ultimately counteract eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. After adjusting nutrient levels, the water can then be used for irrigation. This reduces the need for artificial fertilisers and ensures beneficial use of nutrients instead of letting them aggregate as residues in the water treatment process.
The ReNutriWater project investigated what components (both nutritional and harmful) are present in water produced from wastewater. We studied the physicochemical characteristics of wastewater quality to assess the efficiency of pollutant removal, including micropollutants from pharmaceuticals. We conducted toxicity tests on disinfection by-products to assess the impact on water quality. We checked the nutrient content, including the levels and chemical forms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), which are important for watering plants. We studied the levels of heavy metals, which have a high toxicity effect on living organisms. And to guarantee the sanitary safety of the reclaimed water, we measured microbiological indicators.
These tests help determine how safe and nutrient-rich reclaimed water can be. This allowed us to create risk assessments and circular economy business models in the water sector.

About WaterSafe Tool
WaterSafe’s aim is to promote the protection and reuse of water from wastewater. The main function of the tool is to make calculations based on wastewater parameters entered by the user in order to select the optimal purpose for further use of reclaimed water.
The tool will indicate the appropriate method of water reclamation for a specific purpose, taking into account technological, environmental and economic aspects. By using the tool, you can significantly contribute to the economic transformation of the water and wastewater sector.
